Randy Thorsvig is a man with an amazing story about his travel to the professional world of MMA and overcoming obstacles along the way. Randy got his start in combat sports at a young age, he wrestled in school from 1st grade till he was a senior in high school from there he got a scholarship and wrestled in college. Randy later battled with alcoholism and weight gain that took him from a walking cane to a wheel chair but that didn’t stop him. Randy overcame his obstacles by having intestinal surgery and entering rehab, he emerged sober and ready to start where he left off.

Randy went from 420 lbs to 265 lbs and has been sober for over a year , he is now training at Red River Traditional Taekwondo with Grand Master Jim Grimstead and Academy of Combat Arts with Dylan Spicer, Pablo Garza of the WEC and  a member of this year’s Ultimate Fighter Dane Sayers. Randy has not been training in MMA long only since May of this year but does have a great base in wrestling. He has been training hard in his cardio along with his stand up game and grappling.

Randy has never had a MMA fight before, he said there were no amateur fights he could attend and the only way to fight in his area is to go pro. To get extra practice for his fight Randy will be competing in GI no GI grappling tournament for Submission Hunt Saturday October 9 and is in the open weight division. Randy’s Pro MMA debut will be October 23, 2010 in Bismarck North Dakota for Impact Fighting Championship and he is fighting Jason Cook a BJJ/Grappling fighter. Randy took time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions about his journey to be a professional fighter;

  • How hard is the training and what keeps you going ? “It’s very hard and the thing that keeps me going is the support of my wife”.
  • What is your game plan for the fight ? “I know the guy doesn’t like to stand up and fight so ill stuff his takedowns and work for the KO”.
  • What’s prepared you most for this fight since you have never fought in a cage before ? “We do a lot of live sparring in training camp and its tough so that helps a ton”.
  • What have you learned from this whole experience leading up to your fight ? “ I have always respected MMA fighters but now I’ve learned what they go through is rough and they deserve respect”.
  • Is there anybody you want to give a shout out to ? “All my sponsors; Step In Gear, ROKURFACE, American MMA, 46 and 2 Tattoo and Max Fights”.
