Move over Steven Seagal. Jeane-Claude Van Damme is now in the building.
Although 2012 is a mere 16 days young, it’s highly probable that we’ve already witnessed the Octagon’s most thrilling (and devastating) knockout of the year.
What a way to “kick off” (pun intended) the PPV portion of UFC 142. Seemingly out of nowhere, Edson Barboza was able to erase any hope of a come-from-behind victory for Terry Etim with a spectacular technique which appeared to be pulled directly from a Hollywood action film.
Although the fight was entertaining, Barboza clearly looked to be in control throughout. It appeared as if the Brazilian lightweight was content with keeping his English counterpart at bay with foot movement and a constant barrage of leg kicks. At at nearly 2 minutes into the final frame Barboza unleashed a vicious spinning heel kick that Etim (or anybody watching) never saw coming. The powerful kick put Etim to sleep instantly.
With his exciting performance Barboza earned both “Knockout of the Night” and his third consecutive “Fight of the Night” honors. The highlight reel knockout was Barboza’s first since November of 2010 and pushed his professional record to an impressive 10-0 (4-0 in the UFC).
